- 12-inch USM and associated pipe spool replacement
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Upgrading infrastructure that keeps a city supplied
Greentech Engineers undertook the replacement of a 12-inch ultrasonic gas meter (USM) and associated pipe spool piece on the main incomer Natural Gas pipeline at MNGL’s Chikhli City Gate Station.
The project built on the team’s LPG skid fabrication and installation experience dating back to 2010, extending that capability into a large-diameter Natural Gas skid installation. The operating network, existing alignment constraints and short shutdown window shaped the execution plan.

THE CHALLENGE
Preparing for a tightly controlled shutdown
An operating gas network
The existing skid supplied gas to Pune and surrounding industrial areas, including Chakan, Talegaon and Hinjewadi. The work had to be planned around a very limited shutdown window.
Existing alignment constraints
The project team identified an out-of-plumb skid and reported stress at the existing joints. Matching the entry and exit connections required close attention to the installation geometry.
Calibration and resource planning
USM calibration needed coordination with GAIL’s busy schedule. The presentation also records a 180 man-day constraint, making procurement, preparation and specialist staffing important.
OUR APPROACH
Precision before installation
Secure materials early
Place timely orders for pipes, fittings, valves and accessories so that procurement supports the planned installation work.
Resolve the connection details
Work carefully through the drawings to match the entry and exit joints hole-to-hole.
Coordinate USM calibration
Arrange a calibration slot with GAIL Hazira through active scheduling and coordination.
Bring shutdown expertise to site
Engage experienced technicians familiar with the demands of shutdown work.
Maintain technical coordination
Stay in close contact with the Honeywell team for guidance during the project.

THE OUTCOME
Safe completion, recognised by MNGL
In its appreciation letter dated 27 May 2024, MNGL confirmed the safe and successful completion of the USM and pipe spool replacement. The client recognised the team’s diligence, commitment and leadership in overcoming the project’s challenges.
“The project outcomes have surpassed our expectations, and I cannot commend you enough for setting such a high standard.”
